How It Works

Check food for poison. On Ironveil it also passively improves ordinary poisoned-weapon delivery in PvP and grants a limited PvM potency bonus.

Skill summary, training and related paths
Power Scroll and cap information

Maximum skill: 100. This skill has no active Power Scroll. It cannot train beyond 100 under the current rules.

Understanding effective skill

Which value counts? These numbers use the effective skill: the value after applicable skill bonuses or penalties. This can differ from your trained base value. Bless changes your stats; it does not directly add trained skill points.

PvP

Each effective Taste Identification point adds 0.15 percentage points to ordinary poisoned-weapon delivery, up to +15% at 100. Poisoning adds up to 20%, for one roll capped at 35%. The wielder must meet the stored coating’s trained Poisoning requirement. It adds no PvP poison tier.

PvM

Supported poison delivery gains no level below 50 Taste Identification and one level from 50 through 120. There is no +2 tier.

Requirements

The combat effects are passive. Poison Field receives no Taste Identification bonus. Native Weapon Abilities are unavailable to player characters.

How to use it, step by step

If a step says to use a skill, open your character window, choose Skills and use the button beside that skill. If it says to use a tool, double-click the tool in your backpack. Passive benefits work automatically.

  1. Use Taste Identification from Skills and select food to examine it.
  2. Read whether the check finds poison or fails.
  3. The combat effects are passive; use a supported poison source normally.

What changes as your skill rises

Read the conditions above each table. A percentage may describe a chance, a damage component or a multiplier: those are different things. The other values stay fixed unless the table says otherwise.

What the skill affects: These numbers use the effective skill: the value after applicable skill bonuses or penalties. This can differ from your trained base value. Bless changes your stats; it does not directly add trained skill points.

Detailed formulas and comparison tables

Taste Identification contribution against a player

Each effective Taste Identification point adds 0.15 percentage points, capped at 100. Poisoning adds up to 20% for one roll capped at 35%. The stored coating’s trained Poisoning requirement must be met; Taste Identification alone cannot deliver it. PvP poison tier never increases.

Supported delivery against a creature

The one-level PvM bonus begins at 50.0, can promote Deadly to Lethal and never becomes +2.

Effective Taste IdentificationExtra PvM levels
0–49.90
50–1201

The effects are passive after ordinary delivery qualifies; using Taste Identification on a weapon or target is unnecessary.

In PvP it changes weapon-delivery chance, not poison level or damage. In PvM, supported delivery gains at most one level.

Poison Field receives no Taste Identification bonus. Native Weapon Abilities are unavailable to player characters.

Examples in play

Easy examples

PvP chance, not tier

With Poisoning fixed at 100, Taste Identification 0 / 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 gives 20 / 23 / 26 / 29 / 32 / 35% delivery against a player. A Deadly coating remains Deadly.

One PvM level at most

At 50 or more Taste Identification, supported poison delivery against a creature can gain one level. There is no second extra level at 100.

Advanced notes

Things to remember

  • Tasting a potion or keg tells you what it is, but the ordinary training check is on food. Repeated potion clicks are not a Taste Identification training route.
  • The combat effects are passive: you do not have to taste a weapon, spell or target before each attack.
  • Native Weapon Abilities, including Infectious Strike, are unavailable to player characters.
  • Poison Field receives no Taste Identification bonus.
Training and Skill Progression

TRAINING / SKILL PROGRESSION

One recommended activity for each skill range, with a short note on what you need.

Before you start: set Taste Identification to Up and leave room under the shared 720-point total. Set an unwanted skill to Down if the total is full.

NPC training: when the trainer listed for this skill offers a lesson, the fixed price is 300 gold and the lesson can reach 50.0 if both the individual and total caps have room.

Training area: supported Academy actions receive 5× normal gain through 80.0. An action still needs to run a real skill check; the Academy bonus cannot make an automatic or blocked action train.

Recommended training

Repeat the single activity listed for your level. These are practical training choices; the ranges are recommendations, not new unlock requirements.

Your skillWhat to repeatQuick note
0.0–50.0Cook lessonOptional NPC lesson; 300 gold when offered and room under your caps.
50.0–80.0Use Taste Identification on ordinary foodUse eligible food.

Rules and numbers

Against players, Taste Identification adds up to 15 percentage points to ordinary poisoned-weapon delivery: effective skill × 0.15%, capped at skill 100. Poisoning supplies a separate contribution up to 20%, for a single combined roll capped at 35%; the stored coating’s trained Poisoning requirement must be met. It never raises the PvP poison tier. Against creatures, supported delivery gains at most one poison level from 50.0 skill onward.

Exact rules and scaling
Skill or situationWhat it means
0.0+0% PvP delivery contribution; no extra PvM level
50.0+7.5% PvP delivery contribution; up to one extra PvM level
100.0+15% PvP delivery contribution; up to one extra PvM level

Listed amounts describe the stated conditions. Equipment, target rules, damage, healing limits and other effects can change the final result. An example of a chance is never a promise of the same outcome on every attempt.
