Animal Taming
Tame creatures, raise them from Level 1 to 15 and develop their abilities.
Animal Taming turns eligible wild creatures into companions. Bond with a pet, guide it through combat and shape the abilities it learns.
How do I train this skill?
Recommended activities for Animal Taming at each skill range.
View the training tableHow Animal Taming Works
- Find a tameable creature
Choose a wild, eligible creature. Its exact Animal Taming requirement and follower slots determine whether you can begin.
- Use the Taming skill
Open Skills, use Animal Taming, then target the creature. Make room under your five-follower limit first.
- Your pet starts at Level 1, unbonded
A newly tamed progression pet starts at 0 XP. If it dies before bonding, it is lost permanently.
- Reach Level 2 to bond
Eligible PvM combat earns pet XP. The first level-up at 85 XP bonds the pet automatically.
- Progress to Level 15
Keep fighting eligible monsters with your companion. Levels 5, 10 and 15 open three permanent ability choices.

Bonding & Death
Unbonded pet dies
Lost permanently.
Bonded pet dies
Recover the same companion through Veterinary, Magery Resurrection or the Animal Trainer’s remote Resurrect Pet service. See the exact requirements below.
Training
Tame fresh eligible creatures or earn passive Taming checks through your controlled pet’s participation in valid monster kills.
Pet XP comes from eligible monster fights in which your active companion contributes.
Important Notes
- The custom animal spawn system is Felucca-only. Paragon conversion is disabled.
- You have a five-follower limit; each creature uses its own slots.
- Eligible creatures, including Ferocious ones, can be tamed at full health.
- Pet level, Codex rank and Taming skill progress separately.

True tameable companions begin at Level 1. Their bond, abilities and combat strength develop as they earn XP in eligible PvM encounters.
Pet Abilities
At Levels 5, 10 and 15, an eligible pet can learn a permanent ability. Family, role, gender and previous choices determine the available options. Each pet has its own choices, including two pets of the same species. Open the real Beastmaster Codex to see the choices for your own pet.

Effective skill and exact taming chance
The hard requirement and success chance use effective Animal Taming. Beastmaster supporting power separately uses trained base Animal Taming, with a target of 120.
Success after meeting the hard requirement
Below the creature requirement the chance is 0% and the attempt cannot begin. These values are for a creature with no previous owner after an uninterrupted attempt; every previous owner removes 5 percentage points from the starting chance, down to a 1% floor.
| Effective skill compared with requirement | Success chance |
|---|---|
| Below requirement | 0% · cannot attempt |
| At requirement | 10% |
| Requirement +5 | 25% |

Beastmaster: contribution to the supporting-skill multiplier
Only this skill changes. Every other supporting skill is already at its target. This skill’s target is 120. The multiplier applies to the relevant custom PvM output, not every attack or every spell.

| 90 | 97% |
| 100 | 97.99% |
Eligible creatures, including Ferocious ones, can be tamed at full health. Giant Ice Worm, Giant Beetle and Fire Beetle retain their Ferocious classification, but it no longer imposes a health threshold on the tame attempt.
Kirin and Unicorn have no gender restriction. Cu Sidhe can be tamed and ridden by Humans. True tameable companions and mounts start at Level 1 unbonded and bond automatically at Level 2. A Level 1 death is permanent; Level 2+ bonded pets have Veterinary, Magery and Animal Trainer recovery paths.
Animal Taming can also increase after your real controlled pet damages an eligible PvM monster at least once, at most once per owner every 15 seconds. The pet’s original taming requirement does not limit this passive path. An eligible attempt outside the cooldown has a 50% roll for +0.1; you must be alive, visible and nearby at the kill. Monster level, your own damage and loot rights do not gate this skill check; pet XP keeps its separate contribution rule, while Codex XP follows solo or qualified party allocation. Animal Lore keeps its separate existing practice checks.

| 115.0–120.0 | Tame a fresh Reptalon | Meet the creature’s exact taming requirement and available follower slots. |
Fresh Taming: choose new creatures appropriate to your current skill. Re-taming the same creature uses separate previous-owner rules.
Passive Pet Combat: a valid kill outside the owner cooldown has a 50% roll for +0.1 when your real controlled pet damages the monster at least once, independently of that pet’s original taming requirement. You must be alive, visible and nearby when the monster dies.
Any eligible PvM monster can count; its level, your own damage and your loot rights do not gate the skill check. The cooldown is 15 seconds per owner. Pet XP uses its separate pet-damage threshold; Codex XP follows the character’s solo or qualified party share. Players, pets, summons, controlled targets, training creatures and no-award targets do not qualify.
A matching Power Scroll must unlock 105, 110, 115 or 120. Passive Pet Combat can reach 120.0, but neither route can exceed your cap.

Below a creature’s exact requirement the chance is 0% and the attempt cannot begin. Extra skill does not grant follower slots. Eligible creatures, including Ferocious ones, can be tamed at full health. The Beastmaster support table applies against eligible monsters.
Examples and edge cases
A Dragon at 100.0. A Dragon requires exactly 100.0 effective Animal Taming and four follower slots. At 99.9 the fresh attempt cannot begin; at 100.0 a first-owner attempt starts with a 10% final success chance.
Passive progress at 119.9. With a 120 Power Scroll cap, an owned Reptalon or another eligible ordinary pet that damages an eligible PvM monster can provide the final normal check from 119.9 to 120.0. The monster can be weak; training and no-award targets cannot qualify.
A pet is not free space. A Greater Dragon needs all five follower slots. Raising Animal Taming does not create extra space; manage your existing companions before attempting another pet.
Rules and other skills
Effective Taming must meet the creature’s hard requirement before a fresh attempt can begin; even Ferocious creatures may be tamed at full health. A first-owner attempt starts at 10% there and gains 3 percentage points per skill point, reaching 100% at requirement +30. True tameable companions and mounts start at Level 1 unbonded and become bonded on the real Level 1 → 2 transition at 85 pet XP. A Level 1 death is permanent; Level 2+ bonded pets can be recovered through Veterinary, Magery Resurrection or an Animal Trainer. Passive Pet Combat checks eligible kills, uses a 15-second cooldown per owner and offers a 50% roll for +0.1 on an eligible attempt, independently of the pet’s original taming requirement. Monster difficulty, owner damage and loot rights do not gate this skill check; pet XP keeps its separate contribution check, while Codex XP uses solo or qualified party allocation. Players, controlled creatures, summons, training targets and no-award monsters are excluded. The follower cap remains five; pet level, Codex rank and Pet Mastery are separate progression layers.
- Fresh Taming uses eligible new creatures. Passive Pet Combat has a 50% roll for +0.1 outside its 15-second owner cooldown and cannot be multiplied by extra pets. Pet XP uses its separate contribution threshold; Codex XP follows solo or qualified party allocation.
- A Paralyzed creature can still be tamed. On its first tame, being Paralyzed changes ordinary skill retention from 90% to 86%; Frozen from Web Potion does not.
- Each previous owner lowers the fresh starting success chance by 5 percentage points, but does not raise the hard requirement above 120.
- A new companion starts at Level 1 and unbonded. It bonds automatically when it reaches Level 2 at 85 pet XP.
- A Level 1 unbonded pet is lost permanently on death. A Level 2+ bonded pet can be restored on site with Veterinary or Magery Resurrection, or remotely through an Animal Trainer for 5,000 bank gold.
- Pet resurrection preserves owner, bonding, level, XP, stats, skills and learned Pet Abilities. A dead bonded pet can still be abandoned after one day if the owner does not recover it.
- Kirin and Unicorn have no gender restriction. Humans can tame and ride Cu Sidhe.
- Taming, pet level, Codex rank and learned pet abilities are separate parts of progression.
Skills that work with Animal Taming: Animal Lore — Helps understand and manage the creature. Veterinary — Heals eligible animal companions with bandages. Bushido / Pet Mastery — Supports the combat role of a progressed pet.
Commands, transfer and travel
Ordinary transport mounts in the Mount / Utility family obey valid owner commands, including after a transfer. Combat pets such as Nightmare, Kirin, Unicorn, Hiryu, Cu Sidhe, Beetle and Swamp Dragon retain their normal Taming, Lore and obedience rules.
For supported teleport and travel routes, keep your companion within 3 tiles on the same facet and on Follow, Come or Guard. Eligible controlled pets and owned summons, including the Arcane Gargoyle, travel with you. A distant, stabled or Stay/Stop pet is not remotely recovered; event and destination restrictions still apply.
The Arcane Gargoyle follows your orders and assists in your monster fights rather than pulling an idle monster on arrival. If left out of sight or on another map, use Dismiss Gargoyle in the Arcane Spellbook, or type [ReleaseArcaneGargoyle without needing the book open. Only your current Gargoyle is dismissed and its follower slots are freed. Read the Gargoyle command rules →
PET SAFETY
Death, bonding and recovery
| Situation | Current result |
|---|---|
| New pet · Level 1 | It starts unbonded at 0 XP. Feeding and ordinary loyalty care do not bypass Ironveil progression bonding. |
| Level 1 unbonded pet dies | The pet is permanently lost and cannot be recovered by Veterinary, Magery or an Animal Trainer. Its progression record is removed with it. |
| Pet reaches Level 2 | It becomes bonded automatically on the real Level 1 → 2 transition at 85 pet XP. |
| Level 2+ bonded pet dies | It remains in the world as a dead bonded pet until recovered or removed by the existing abandonment rule. |
| Pet is resurrected | The same pet and Serial return with up to 10 Hits, full Stamina and 0 Mana. Owner, bonding, level, XP, stats, skills, family, sex and learned Pet Abilities remain unchanged. |
| Resurrection skill loss | None. Veterinary, Magery Resurrection and the Animal Trainer do not apply permanent skill, stat, level, XP or Pet Ability loss. |
| Dead bonded pet is abandoned | If its owner is absent, out of range, on another map or cannot be seen, the existing one-day abandonment timer starts. Save, logout and restart do not stop an already-running timer. |
Three ways to recover a bonded pet
| Method | Where it works | Requirements and result |
|---|---|---|
| Veterinary | On site | The ghost must be reachable. Requires at least 80 Veterinary and 80 Animal Lore, then uses the normal Veterinary resurrection attempt. |
| Magery · Resurrection | On site | The ghost must be within the spell’s normal range and line of sight. The owner accepts the resurrection; another Mage may help without changing ownership. |
| Animal Trainer · Resurrect Pet | Remote recovery | Lists the owner’s bonded dead pets even from another map or dungeon. Costs 5,000 bank gold and charges only after the pet can be restored to a valid tile near the Trainer. |
PASSIVE ANIMAL TAMING
Qualified pet combat can train Taming
A passive check needs a real controlled pet to damage an eligible PvM monster at least once. The owner must be alive, visible and nearby when it dies. The pet’s original Taming requirement does not restrict this route. Any eligible monster can count, including a weak one: there is no monster-level requirement, owner damage requirement or loot-right requirement for this skill check. Pet XP retains its separate pet-contribution check; Codex XP uses the character’s solo or qualified party allocation. One passive Taming check can occur per owner every 15 seconds.
| Passive Taming rule | Current behavior |
|---|---|
| Pet participation | At least one real damage point to an eligible PvM monster |
| Pet requirement | No restriction based on the pet’s original Animal Taming requirement |
| Owner position | Alive, visible and nearby when the monster dies |
| Monster level | No recommended-level threshold; weak eligible monsters can count |
| Owner contribution | No personal damage or loot-right requirement |
| Check interval | At most one eligible attempt per owner every 15 seconds |
| Gain roll | 50% for +0.1 Animal Taming on an eligible attempt; skill locks and caps still apply |
| Skill cap | Up to your unlocked individual cap, including 120 with Power Scrolls |
A qualifying kill outside the cooldown has a 50% roll for +0.1, not a guaranteed gain. Several pets do not grant extra rolls on the same kill. Individual and total caps, the Up lock and available Down skills still apply.
PET PROGRESSION
Which pets can reach levels 1–15
True tameable companions, including normal tameable mounts, join Ironveil progression at Level 1 and become bonded at Level 2. To earn combat XP, the pet must be alive, controlled, active with its owner and contributing to an eligible monster fight. A stabled or released pet keeps its saved profile but earns nothing until it is active again. Summoned creatures and special transport, reward or faction-only mount objects do not enter pet progression.

| Avian | Parrot, Eagle, Bird, Tropical Bird, Chicken | Aerial Instinct; natural Utility role | Universal level-5 role choices |
| Beast | General animals, Mongbats, Imps and fallback creatures | Adaptability; natural Utility role | Universal level-5 role choices |
| Beetle | Deathwatch Beetle, Giant Beetle, Fire Beetle, Rune Beetle | Venom Affinity; natural Utility role | Universal level-5 role choices |
| Mystic | Nightmare, Kirin, Unicorn, Fire Steed | Adaptability; natural Offensive role | Universal level-5 role choices |
| Mount / Utility | Pack animals, Horse, Llama, Ostards, Ridgebacks and Faction War Horses | Adaptability; natural Utility role | Universal level-5 role choices |
Choices are per pet, not shared between pets of the same species. At level 5 every eligible family can choose Fierce Instinct, Guardian Instinct or Restorative Instinct. Dragonkin also have their own learned branches. The family is resolved from the real creature type; a pet is not excluded merely because it is absent from a short example list.
