With a shield and at least 80 Dexterity, Parrying 100 / 110 / 120 gives 30 / 31.25 / 32.5% chance. The current PvP policy halves the contribution of skill above 100.

Parrying
Combat · Skill guide
Allows shield blocks and defines the Guardian defensive path.
How do I train this skill?
Recommended activities for Parrying at each skill range.

Give your character a chance to block an incoming attack with a shield. A block can stop a hit that would otherwise hurt you.
Skill summary, training and related paths
Power Scroll and cap information
Maximum skill: 120 with a matching Power Scroll. It starts with a 100 cap. Scrolls unlock 105, 110, 115 or 120; you still train the points and keep the same shared total of 720.
Understanding effective skill
Which value counts? These numbers use the effective skill: the value after applicable skill bonuses or penalties. This can differ from your trained base value. Bless changes your stats; it does not directly add trained skill points. The Dexterity penalty uses current Dex, including stat bonuses.
With the same shield and Dexterity conditions, Parrying 100 / 110 / 120 gives 30 / 32.5 / 35%. Guardian also uses Parrying with Mysticism for its separate role power.
Requirements
A shield is required. Dexterity below 80 reduces the block chance. Each eligible attack has its own check; these are not flat damage-reduction percentages.
How to use it, step by step
If a step says to use a skill, open your character window, choose Skills and use the button beside that skill. If it says to use a tool, double-click the tool in your backpack. Passive benefits work automatically.
- Equip a shield your character can use.
- Fight normally. Parrying is checked automatically when a blockable attack reaches you.
- Keep the shield equipped while training against appropriate enemies or the Academy shield-training opponent.
What changes as your skill rises
Read the conditions above each table. A percentage may describe a chance, a damage component or a multiplier: those are different things. The other values stay fixed unless the table says otherwise.
What the skill affects: These numbers use the effective skill: the value after applicable skill bonuses or penalties. This can differ from your trained base value. Bless changes your stats; it does not directly add trained skill points. The Dexterity penalty uses current Dex, including stat bonuses.
Detailed formulas and comparison tables
Shield block chance
A shield is equipped and current Dex is at least 80. Each incoming eligible attack has its own block check.
| Effective Parrying | Block chance |
|---|---|
| 80 | 20% |
| 90 | 22.5% |
| 100 | 30% |
Low Dex reduces the same block chance
Parrying stays at effective 100. The Dexterity benefit for shield blocking stops at 80.
| Current Dex | Block chance |
|---|---|
| 50 | 21% |
| 70 | 27% |
| 80 | 30% |
| 100 or 115 | 30% |
The shield-block threshold is 80 Dex; the PvP bandage threshold is 100 Dex. They are separate rules.
100–120 scaling: what you gain
100–120 scaling: what you gain
Only the skill in the first column changes unless the table says otherwise. Each extra trained point still uses one point from your shared total of 720.
In the combat calculations described here, progress above 100 counts at half strength against another player: 110 contributes as 105, and 120 as 110. Your trained skill stays unchanged. The same rule covers these calculations when fighting another player’s pet or helping a participant in player combat.
Shield block
Shield equipped, current Dexterity at least 80, no other block modifiers.
| Parrying | Incoming monster attack | Incoming player attack |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 30% | 30% |
| 110 | 32.5% | 31.25% |
| 120 | 35% | 32.5% |
A block is a separate chance on each eligible attack. This does not mean all incoming damage is reduced by the displayed percentage.
Examples in play

A chance, not a guarantee
At Parrying 100 and Dexterity 80 or more, the basic block chance is 30%. Think of roughly 30 blocks out of 100 eligible attacks over time, not a guaranteed block every third hit. At Dexterity 10, that chance is 9%.

Things to remember
- Ironveil requires a shield. Training Parrying while holding only a two-handed weapon will not give shield blocks.
- Dexterity is a character stat, not another skill. It affects the block chance below 80.
Training and Skill Progression
TRAINING / SKILL PROGRESSION
One recommended activity for each skill range, with a short note on what you need.
Before you start: set Parrying to Up and leave room under the shared 720-point total. Set an unwanted skill to Down if the total is full.
NPC training: when the trainer listed for this skill offers a lesson, the fixed price is 300 gold and the lesson can reach 50.0 if both the individual and total caps have room.
Training area: supported Academy actions receive 5× normal gain through 80.0. An action still needs to run a real skill check; the Academy bonus cannot make an automatic or blocked action train.
Beyond 100: consume the matching 105, 110, 115 or 120 Power Scroll first. A scroll raises only the individual cap; it grants no trained points and does not increase the shared 720-point total.
Recommended training
Repeat the single activity listed for your level. These are practical training choices; the ranges are recommendations, not new unlock requirements.
| Your skill | What to repeat | Quick note |
|---|---|---|
| 0.0–50.0 | Combat trainer lesson | Optional NPC lesson; 300 gold when offered and room under your caps. |
| 50.0–80.0 | Take Academy attacks with a shield | Equip a shield and receive eligible incoming attacks. |
| 80.0–100.0 | Take eligible attacks with a shield | Equip a shield and receive eligible incoming attacks. |
| 100.0–120.0 | Take eligible attacks with a shield | Equip a shield and receive eligible incoming attacks. |
Rules and numbers
A shield is required. At 80+ Dexterity, block chance is skill ÷ 400 plus 5% at 100+. PvP first halves the contribution above skill 100: Parrying 100/110/120 gives 30/31.25/32.5%, versus 30/32.5/35% in PvM. Lower Dexterity multiplies that chance by (20 + Dexterity) ÷ 100.
Exact rules and scaling
| Skill or situation | What it means |
|---|---|
| 100 skill · 10 Dex | 9% |
| 100 skill · 80+ Dex | 30% |
Listed amounts describe the stated conditions. Equipment, target rules, damage, healing limits and other effects can change the final result. An example of a chance is never a promise of the same outcome on every attempt.
